Alan, I too was a student apprentice at Uskmoth 1963 to 1968, nominally the B Station but in fact at both. Station Superintendent Mr Lloyd-Williams, Maintenance Super. Alan Leadbetter, (became Station Super. at Skelton Grange). I moved on to Carmarthen Bay and ended up at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station and was lucky to get early retirement. Looking back the training we got was very good, craft appreciation at Penarth, Maintenance, Operations, Chemistry, Drawing Office, Efficiency and other departments. I usually refer to myself as a power station engineer, too many aspects to go into detail. No computers back then. Apprentice away-days were quite memorable.
Good times long past, I'm 81 this week.

I used to love seeing the chimney on the horizon. Always regretted I never got to go to an open day they had there back in the 80s. The architecture was beautiful as I've seen in photographs. It still upsets me today to know that it's gone. I tried to join a fight to save it but they had their way, and now have abandoned the plans they were going to replace it with. It should have been saved.

My father Alan Cook retired as Ops Sup after many years at Ferry C. He was dedicated to the people who made it 'work', dying much too you. For me I took his enthusiasm for making things work into a successful aircraft design career.

I was at Fawley in 1974 - 1975 as part of my CEGB training. This was a great place to work and we all had the sense that the place had been built to a very high standard. When originally commissioned (before my time) one of the CW pumps was powered by an experimental superconducting motor. In the way of thermal power stations Fawley became expensive and obsolete and has now gone completely. Disgracefully, the iconic control building has been demolished in an act of architectural vandalism.

In reply to <a href="https://www.powerstations.uk/tilbury-b-power-station-essex/#comment-883">Clare</a>.

Hello Clare I worked with your Father during the late Seventies, I was then an apprentice your Father was indeed an accomplished electrician who taught me much about Precipitators (they filter dust out of the exhaust gas). We both used to live in Chadwell at that time and when he had I think a knee op or something I used to pick him up for work, I think he used to cycle normally.
