The six boilers at Drax Power Station were manufactured by Babcock and Wilcox. Each of the subcritical boiler units generate 554kg/s of superheat steam at 160bara and 565°C and reheat steam at 40bara and 565°C. The boilers are of the natural circulation, balanced draught, and two pass type. Each boiler unit is equipped with Low NOX PF Burners arranged on the front and rear furnace walls (opposed wall firing). The units have operational Wet Limestone Gypsum FGD plant and therefore have opt-in status under LCPD.

All six boilers were originally fired with bituminous coal. Between 2013 to 2016 three of the boilers were converted to fire biomass. One further unit was converted to fire biomass in 2018.
